Principal's Message

Valley View Elementary (Valley View) is a 2010 California Distinguished School Award recipient and an AVID Certified School. We strive to provide a safe student environment with strong academically supportive and encouraging staff. Our School Personnel Accountability Report Card (SPARC) is aligned with the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) providing academic, social-emotional, college and career readiness skills through specialized internal programs serving our diverse population. In the 2019-20 school year, we focused on developing a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). The goal of MTSS is to help students with the goals of (1) successful academic transition from the elementary to middle school setting by identifying academic needs and applying appropriate interventions and (2) a goal of implementing positive behavioral interventions to improve school culture for students, staff and parents. We believe positive behavior interventions support college and career successes by helping students learn habits and skills that drive their ability to engage in the learning environment. In the next school year, we plan to continue developing our positive behavior program to help students learn skills that promote scholarship and to become college and career ready.

Career and College Readiness Student Outcomes

At Valley View we believe evaluating student outcomes is important in identifying student needs and assessing program effectiveness in preparing our students to not only graduate high school, but to support college and career readiness. The following graphs include the number of students who completed a computer-assisted career planning assignment through California Career Zone and the number of students who are able to describe their California Public College Options.

Career Readiness

The Student Support Team (SST) at Valley View supports student's career readiness by creating opportunities for students to learn more about the careers they are interested in pursuing. Students in 5th and 6th grades completed a career interest inventory to explore jobs that are related to their interests. Following the interest inventory, students were able to gather more information about their desired careers including job functions, average salary, required educational level, important career skills, and average job growth. Students shared this information with a partner and then had the opportunity to share their findings with the class. In the 2019-2020 school year, 82 5th graders completed the assignment along with 94 students from the 6th grade

College Readiness

The SST at Valley View promotes the development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that contribute to college readiness and to students becoming lifelong learners. To support this goal, students in the 5th and 6th grades are provided with a lesson about a variety of post-secondary educational options. Students learned about vocational, community, private, and public college settings. Students had the opportunity to learn about types of degrees, certificates, and apprenticeship programs along with the benefits of pursuing post-secondary education. To reinforce student understanding, students were asked to describe their California public college options. In the 2019-2020 school year, 31 5th graders and 26 6th graders were able to describe these options.

21st Century Skills

The Valley View SST supports the development of lifelong 21st Century Skills, along with college and career skills and goals by integrating the California Standards for Career Ready Practice with the American School Counselor Association standards. Through Valley View's grade level elective exploration opportunities, students practice linking academic knowledge with technical skills, enhance self-management and productivity, develop clear and effective communication styles, and apply critical thinking to solve complex problems and resolve potential roadblocks. These are skills the SST believe will become life-long leadership skills for our students throughout their professional lives.

Career and College Readiness School Site Programs and Community Partnerships

At Valley View, our school site programs and community partnerships strive to help students develop the 21st century skills needed to be future leaders in our communities. Through programs such as Leadership Development Through Physical Education (LDTPE) and Boys Town, students at Valley View are learning many of the skills needed to be college and career ready. These include collaboration, communication, and social skills. Our community partnerships have been invaluable in this process as they have provided resources, curriculum, and services that helped our students succeed in developing these skills.

• Boys Town - Social-Emotional skills curriculum used by all staff at Valley View
• LDTPE - Program in P.E. to develop communication, social-emotional, and leadership skills
• Check In / Out - Opportunity for students at the start and end of day to review skills to succeed
• Campus Climate Aides promote social support for students through recess activities and class support
• Behavior Intervention Team to promptly address behavioral issues that arise on campus

Community Partnerships

• All It Takes - Provider of LDTPE curriculum used in P.E. to support social-emotional development
• Children's Bureau - Provider of School-Based Mental Health Services for students and families
• City of Lancaster Parks and Recreation - Provides after school care and homework support to students
• Lancaster West Rotary - Offers financial support for extracurriculars and attendance improvement
• WAVE Foundation - Provides financial support for innovative projects and programs.

The Valley View SST is comprised of a set of staff and administrators who are dedicated to helping every student succeed. Our team strives to deliver equitable programs and services to meet students’ diverse needs. Valley View’s SST collaborates frequently to identify and provide academic, social, and career support for all students. The SST team members all hold appropriate degrees and credentials and maintain memberships in the following professional organizations: Association of California School Administrators, American School Counselor Association, California Association of School Psychologists, California Association of Resource Specialists, California Teachers Association, and the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
